I decided to sell Horizon Betapro, which I bought only 11 days ago for 4.24$ a share (320 shares total) for 5.85$ which netted me 35% return on my investment! A little over 3% daily return on money is always a wonderful thing! This raised me 1 850$ in Canadian funds which I can invest elsewhere to begin recouping my “paper losses” in Canwest, though it looks like that will also turn around shortly.
On Wednesday, I plan on acquiring three new companies, I reviewed by current stocks in 27 companies and 24 of them are on very solid ground while 3 of them, I should have reviewed a little more closely as, in hindsight, I shouldn’t have bought them in the first place.
In the future, I will try to be more careful in my stock choices, I will take a deeper look at the company balance sheet , things I sometimes skimmed over. I am anxious to find-out when the stock market hits bottom at this point, this crazy up and down is getting tiring.

On Monday, I bought 4 new companies.
- 1 000 shares of Grande Cache Coal (GCE.TO) at 60 cents a share
- 4 000 shares at 12.5 cents each of Allen-Vanguard Corp (VRS.TO) for the second time, hoping to make a profit from this stock
- 4 000 shares of Resin Systems Inc. (RS.TO) at 17 cents a share, for the third time
- 5 000 shares of Oilexco Inck. (OIL.TO) at 14.5 cents a share
The next day, I had a hundred dollars left in my trading account so I decided to buy 3 600 shares of Haemacure Corp (HAE.TO) for 2.5 cents a share.
February Blues
Considering I almost doubled my money (15K to just shy of 30K) over a six week period, February has been absolutely horrible for me. This month alone, my portfolio lost almost 30% of it’s value! I made a few trades but what is really hurting the most right now is still Canwest, if this stock can turn-around, I will probably sell half the shares if I can get close to what I bought them for several weeks ago and buy some companies that know how to do more than go down! I have a lot of companies I want to invest in but my stock market funds are all tied-up at the moment, I need to sell some stuff to get more but so far, everything is going in the wrong direction… and I don’t sell at a loss. I guess the good news from all this is several months down the road, I am still up an overall 120% on my initial 15K investment though I far prefered my 195% I enjoyed a little over a month ago
Playing the stock market these days is like crossing the Canadian Rockies by foot , it is hard to go up but easy to go down.

After hearing how professionals like Warren Buffet lost a bunch of money on the stock market, I don’t feel so bad anymore that my February wasn’t as I would have hoped but I did stay my ground at least if you ignore my Canwest (ongoing) gamble.

Canwest isn't doing so well... and they got comnpany!
February Tribulations
Believe it or not, I am still playing on the stock market with my original 15K investment. This month instead of hitting the 30K I was hoping, I slid down a bit to 26K, mostly due to Canwest which can reverse course very fast so I am not too concerned, just about all the media outlets in Canada, even the national CBC, is having funding gaps and problems. For instance Canwest lost 30% in share value since I bought them, when you have 10 000$ in shares, that begins to feel like real money after a while!
Freeing-up some stagnant fund
I decided to sell four stocks that are about break-even, I didn’t make much money but I didn’t lose anything selling them neither. It raised a total of 2 600$ which I will plunge right back into the stock market into some very promising companies I have discovered. The companies I sold were 7 000 shares of Delta Uranium Inc (DUR.TO), 2 000 shares of Kaboose Inc (KAB.TO), 10 000 shares of Call Genie (GNE.TO) and 2 000 shares of Corectec Inc (CYY.TO).

Things have been really busy for me for the past month, I haven’t been able to update this site as much as I would have liked as the Stock Market usually has its worst performance in the months of February and September. I have been actively searching for my next gold mine and I think I got it!
Sold my stocks in WNS and RBM
I originally bought 10 000 shares of Warnex Inc. (WNX.TO) for 5 cents a share and sold them a few days ago for 57 cents a share, netting me a profit of 45% over a 30 day period! I also sold my 5 000 shares in Response Biomedical Corp. (RBM.TO) for the second time, bought at 11.5 cents and sold this time around for 16.5 cents a share netting me 40% return on my money in a two week period of time
Horizons Betapro Crude Oil Bull
A friend of mine who was very well-off mentioned this stock to me and when I saw what happened to it, it’s tough not to want to buy a tonne of this companies stock! Just look at this chart!

HORIZONS NYMEX Crude Oil Bull P (Toronto: HOU.TO)
This stock has a 52 week range from upwards of 200$ to now, is available for as little as 4.66$!!! This is crazy considering this company is profitable, has no debts and we all know that crude oil is only going up as time goes bye. This is a huge opportunity, maybe even bigger than Canwest! So, I bought 320 shares of HOU with the money I made from the sale of my WNX.TO and RBM.TO stocks. I wish I had more money to put into this stock but until I make room by selling other stocks at a profit, I will be on the sidelines for a little longer.
Canwest costs me 1 500$!
This Friday was my biggest paper loss ever, I own 20 000 shares of Canwest and when the stock market lost 2.88%, I lost 7.5 cents a share of this company which wasn’t very fun! I am sure it will bounce back though, so no worries.

I am watching Canwest Global Communications very closely since I have (depending on the day) about 10 thousand dollars in this stock (20 000 shares). The bad news just keeps coming which makes me wish I bought all my shares in them a little later as they just keep dropping!
Why 10 thousand dollars isn’t a big deal
I am up over 14 thousand dollars profit since I began on the stock market at the end of November so this is monopoly money I am gambling with. I knew when I first started on the stock market that I had to play with money I could afford to lose and so, this may be a big amount of money but if Canwest went under tomorrow, I still would have made more money on the stock market than if I had put this money into the bank.
Canwest will revive
Canwest is being hit by a double whammy at the moment, sure, they have a lot of debt and banks are refusing to lend them more (sound familiar) but they are a very asset rich company with heavy influence is Canada. The other problem they are suffering from is the “economic crisis” which is a psychological , not a “reality” founded one relating to this company. People are panicked, they aren’t spending like they use to and as a result, advertisers are holding back investing into their future. In a recession, there are two ways to get through it stronger, one of which is investing in your future.
I haven’t lost until I sold
I have a lot of money in Canwest but if you look at their history, this is a very well performing and strong stock and just happen to get kicked in the head and balls at the same time… the result is pain but recovery will lead to a smarter, more agile and profitable company. This isn’t a bad thing. Consider this, two years ago, their stock was worth over 10$ and now it dropped as low as 40 cents… time to buy! If I had bought their stock at 10$, I would be freaking out right now, but I bought them when they were heavily undervalued and can go nowhere but UP in my opinion.

- SMG 10 000
- SVC 1 000
- TLC 2 000
- WEF 5 000

- ZL 2 000
I am taking on overall long-view of the stock market, if something doubles or makes a good return, I will sell it to get some other stocks I am watching, otherwise, I will just play a waiting game. Right now, the analysts are all saying that this year the market will be down and back-up in 2010 – these are the same guys who never saw the economic crisis happen so I don’t hold to much stock in their opinions. I am now looking for a few more companies of the likes of Canwest which I can ride upwards and are currently available at rock bottom prices.

I sold a bunch of stock a few days ago and to my surprise, it cost me a small fortune, I still made a profit but got dinged by fees of about 800$! I noticed things were a little funny when I traded individual stocks but thought nothing of it but when I sold 16 shares, I was astonished by how much my “net profit” had dropped. I called my broker and they said there is a transaction fee plus a percentage fee. I guess eating nothing but moose and squirrel meat with frozen potatoes for the past few months caused my eyes to miss the “fine print” when I signed-up to CredentialDirect. No big deal, now I know, I still made money but now I have to be a little more careful. As a result of these surprise fees, I have less Canwest Global Communications (CGS.TO) than I thought I would have but they still make-up a substantial part of my holdings.

I have now updated my stock holdings bar on the right hand side of this blog to reflect these changes.
Arise Ballard… hopefully tomorrows technologies make me money today!
Tomorrow I plan on buying some Ballard Power Systems Inc. (BLD.TO) which manufacturers batteries which are increasingly becoming affordable and with electric cars, in high demand. I am also planning on buying some Arise Technologies Corporation shares as well (APV.TO) whose focus is on solar power technologies, which will also increase in demand as time goes by.

Hi, interesting BLOG you have here and I do agree with you … doubling your money in the stock market is not hard.
Are you not concerned with the huge debt, decreasing ad revenue and possibility of them not being able to make debt payments?
Dave
Hi Dave, thank you for your comment and you bring-up some very important points. I know Canwest Global Communications (CGS.TO) had it’s biggest ever loss and enormous debts that need servicing but I believe that this stock will gain back at least half of its original value. Whether this takes a week or a month, the rewards are hard to pass on in my opinion. I think this stock will go up fast though once people realize the value behind Canwest Global Communications. I have no second thoughts in investing 15K into this company which are basically all of my gains over the past two months but if I am right, this 15K will be worth 30K very soon! I am still investing my other half into other companies in the meantime.

On January 26th, I sold 16 companies in the hopes of raising about ten grand to buy some more Canwest Global Communications (CGS.TO). I originally paid a total of 8 654$ for these stocks and sold them for 9 672$ after holding them for between 10 to 25 days. That is an 11.5% return on my money in less than a month! As a result of this transaction, the companies I no longer own are:
- ADS
- AKL
- BSY
- CBM
- CWG
- EIN
- ELR
- ICS
- HRG
- MTM
- ORB
- OSI
- RBM
- RDL
- SGV
- TIO
I have already put in an order for an additional 5 800 shares of Canwest Global Communications and in three days, I will be buying an additional 10K$ in Canwest as well. I really believe heavily in this stock, it’s very undervalued and I look forward to riding the wave upwards!
